Here the elders of St. Vincent express their ideas, beliefs, practices, visions, and teaching. Found on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent, they are one of the most thriving mystical and ecstatic cultures in the world. Formerly called the St. Vincent Shakers and now known as Spiritual Baptists, they exercise an ecstatic and visionary form of Christianity. They teach how the reading of sacred texts requires ongoing doses of ecstatic experience that purify the heart and open spiritual eyes. Their most important ritual is called mourning, a 1-3 week fast supervised by church elders. Its purpose is to send one into the world of spirit, where spiritual classrooms provide special instruction and guidance. There one may receive the gift of 'doption, a performance of ecstatic body pumping that can bring forth profound ecstatic experiences.
The Christian ecstatics of St. Vincent arguably show the most spiritually developed form of Christianity, one that does not get as easily stuck in the language games of either closed minded (and closed hearted) literalists and overly rational academic theologians. Instead, it maintains a vibrant connection to both mystical experience and textual inspiration.
